Desert Inspiration

Germany 2015 / Documentary / 57 minutes / Director: Robert Krieg, Monika Nolte / Universal

A journey of discovery into the world of the Berbers and a sound experience for all world music fans

The German Sinti guitarist Lulo Reinhardt, one of the most important innovators of gypsy music, travels to the south of Morocco. He immerses himself in the world of the Berbers, whose music, poetry and dances evoke the unity of man and nature. On the banks of the Draa, Lulo Reinhardt meets his friend and colleague Cherif El Hamri. Through music they quickly find a common language. Elements of Sinti Swing combine with the hypnotic and repetitive sounds of Ahwash, a ritual of cleansing and renewal – Orient meets Occident in a unique way.

At this fascinating place, the gateway to the desert, the musician also meets a group of young Berbers who are searching for their own identity in the area of conflict between traditional culture and western influence. The contrast between nomadic knowledge and our European civilisation, which shows little consideration for nature and the environment, becomes particularly clear here.
