A documentary film about the painful return of a murderer to society
He's doing life for shooting a female prosecutor. She called him a "lousy Jew" and put him behind bars for six years on mere suspicion. This is what Gabriel told filmmaker Andrei Schwartz when they met during filming at the Romanian high-security prison Rahova. The director has sympathy for the little man with the melancholic eyes and when Gabriel is released on parole after more than twenty years of imprisonment, he is at his side as a documentary filmmaker and friend.
But the conversations between director and protagonist always lead back to the starting point: the murder. Gabriel seems to sincerely regret his deed, and yet the filmmaker increasingly doubts whether he is telling the whole truth. In order to shed light on the matter, Andrei Schwartz finally makes a momentous decision and asks for access to the murder file.
"Outside" is a documentary film about the painful return of a murderer to society and at the same time tells the story of an extraordinary friendship between a director and his protagonist, which is seriously put to the test.
