Moving documentary "Where to, Miss?"
The young Indian woman Devki longs to become a taxi driver. In a metropolis of millions like Delhi, of all places, where even emancipated women only go out on the streets at night in the company of men or in groups. Devki applies to the "Women on Wheels" initiative. Here, women are trained to become taxi drivers so that they can become financially independent and bring other women home safely. But Devki's family has no understanding for her plans for the future.
In India, a proverb says: A woman belongs first to her father, then to her husband and finally to her son. Director Manuela Bastian accompanies her protagonist through these three phases of life as daughter, wife and mother. She impressively shows the conflict a woman in India gets into when she wants to break out of the traditional roles: Because while Devki tries to stay true to herself and her dreams, she has to be more and more afraid of losing her family.
"Where to, Miss?" is the moving portrait of a young Indian woman who courageously fights for her rights in a male-dominated society. Manuela Bastian's extraordinary cinema debut was awarded the German Human Rights Film Prize in 2016. Outstanding are the grandiose poetic images and the beautiful music by the German folktronica duo Milky Chance. It was composed especially for the film and has not been released anywhere else.
