A moving portrait of a young Indian woman
The young Indian Devki is eager to become a taxi driver. In a metropolis of millions like Delhi, of all places, where even emancipated women only go out on the streets at night when accompanied by men or in groups. Devki applies to the initiative "Women on Wheels". Here women are trained as taxi drivers so that they become financially independent and can bring other women home safely. But Devki's family has no understanding for her future plans.
In India, a proverb says: A woman belongs first to her father, then to her husband and finally to her son. Director Manuela Bastian accompanies her protagonist through these three phases of life as daughter, wife and mother. She impressively shows the conflict a woman in India gets into when she wants to break out of the traditional role specifications: While Devki tries to stay true to herself and her dreams, she has to fear more and more the loss of her family.
"Where to, Miss?" is the moving portrait of a young Indian woman who courageously fights for her rights in a male-dominated society. Manuela Bastian's extraordinary cinema debut was awarded the German Human Rights Film Prize in 2016. Outstanding are the grandiose poetic images and the beautiful music by the German folktronica duo Milky Chance. It was composed especially for the film and has not been released anywhere else.
