International Women's Day — FILMS BY FEMALE DIRECTORS
Last year, Jane Campion won the Oscar in the Best Director category for "The Power of the Dog" - but only as the third woman ever! As in many other industries, the film industry still has a long way to go before the gender gap is balanced. W-FILM is committed to promoting films by, with and about women: currently, for example, the gripping war drama "Lost Transport" by Saskia Diesing, the upbeat documentary "Sorry Comrade" by Vera Brückner or the surreal America satire "Land of Dreams" by Shirin Neshat. On the occasion of International Women's Day, we present to you 43 films by female directors in our repertoire!
Weather Makers: Now on DVD & as VoD
"Thrilling!"
WDR3
As of now, February 24, the documentary "Wettermacher" is available on DVD and as VoD in the W-FILM online store as well as in regular stores. The award-winning cult director Stanislaw Mucha ("Kolyma") takes us to what is probably the loneliest workplace in the world: three weathermen measure the weather on the polar island of "Chodowaricha" without any electronics and with the simplest of tools. Unimaginable, because their work also influences our weather forecasts. But how can the three bizarre meteorologists live and work in complete isolation?
Lost Transport: Cinema release 27 April
The gripping war drama "Lost Transport" opens in cinemas nationwide on April 27, 2023. Inspired by true events surrounding a liberated deportation train, director Saskia Diesing delivers an unprecedented female perspective on the end of World War 2: Three women - a Jewish Dutch woman, a young German woman and a Russian sniper - defy differing sensibilities to stick together in an extreme situation. A strongly acted tribute to women's resilience as well as a timeless story about humanity and forgiveness!

Autumn 2018: during the evacuation of Hambacher Forst, film student Steffen Meyn suffered a fatal accident. Based on footage he collected over two years, we follow Steffen up close as he makes his way through the forest. With him, we get to know the activists and gain never-before-seen insights into their lives and philosophies. Behind all this are the questions: What drives these people? Why are they willing to endanger their lives for activism?

Starting today, February 9, the colorful documentary "Sorry Comrade" opens in theaters nationwide. The (almost) unbelievable love and escape story of Hedi and Karl-Heinz at the time of the Cold War has so far enraptured premiere audiences in Munich and Cologne as well as the press. Currently, director Vera Brückner and the two protagonists are on a big East-West cinema tour!
We are looking forward to seeing "Sorry Comrade" in the cinema and wish you a lot of fun!
